A Study on Prental Care and Delivery Environment


Abstract
A survey was conducted from April, to July, 1972 toward 1, 075 married women residing in Sungnam area near Seoul City on knowledge, attitude and practice in relation to pregnancy and delivery.
The results and findings obtained from the study are summarized as follows.
(A) General characteristics of respondents.
(1) The age distribution of respondents ranged from 20 to 45. The most frequent age group was 25-29 with 81.5 percent and women¢¥s age at first marriage ranged from 16 to 27. For the entire respondents, age at marriage averaged 20. 9 years.
(2) The educational career; Women who was graduated primary school occupied the top rate with 51.8 percent, while those having middle school background or above rated 45 percent.
(3) Occupation of husbands; 18.8 percent of husbands turned out to have no occupation, while laborers, sales workers and clerical workers constituted about 65 percent.
(B) Parity of women.
(4) Number of living children; Those women who had two or three babies occupied the top rate with total 55.2 percent, average for the whole was 2. 7 babies.
(5) The wastage of pregnancies; Those women who had experienced the induced or spontaneous abortions turned out to be 40. 1 percent and 13. 2 percent respectively, while only 2.3 percent of women had experienced premature deliveries.
(C) Prenatal care.
(6) About half(53. 8%) of the women utilized medical facilities more than once during last pregnancy; Hospital or Clinic 61. 9 percent, Health Center 13.0 percent and Midwife¢¥s House 7.4 percent.
(7) The rate of women having prenatal cares turned out to be 53.9 percent, and most women(89. 2 0) had some knowledge about prenatal cares. The knowledge and frequency of receiving prenatal cares with all medical facilities was proved to be increasing gradually with upward progress of the educational level.
(8) The most frequent reason for receiving prenatal cares was disclosed to be "To know the fetal presentation" in 64.9 percent, and followed by "To know both maternal and fetal condition" in 50. 9 percent.
(9) The reasons for not receiving prenatal cares during last delivery was proved to be "No abnormalities during pregnancy" in 69. 4 percent, "No money to spend" in 16.1 percent, and "Shyness" in 1.8 percent, etc.
(10) Those women who wanted to receive prenatal care in next pregnancy were proved to be 65. 7 percent and those who did not want to 4. 8 percent.
(11) The main reasons for not wishing to received prenatal cares in next pregnancy were economic difficulties with 60.8 percent and "No problem in health" with, 33. 3 percent.
(D) Delivery environments and its related problems.
(12) 73.5 percent of women had experienced home delivery, and out of total delivery 22. 5 percent utilized medical facilities Hospital or Clinic 16. 0 percent, Midwife¢¥s House 5. 5 percent, and Health Center 1. 0 percent.
(13) The utilization rate of medical facilities. for delivery increased in proportion to respondents¢¥ educational level.
(14) It was observed that 4. 6 percent of home deliveries were attended by doctors, 16.9 percent by midwifes and 67.3 percent were preformed by family.
(15) As the reasons for home deliveries in 42.2 percent of the women, was only "No abnormalities", in 23. 5 percent "No money to spend", and in 12. 5 percent "To urgent delivery" etc.
(16) Those women who wanted to utilize hospital or clinic at next delivery were only 27. 1 percent and the percentage of women wishing to deliver in next pregnancy at medical facilities rose with educational level.
(17) Almost half of women (45.5%) wanted to have family¢¥s attention at next delivery because of economic difficulty.
(18) In home delivery, scissors to cut umbilical cord comprised the top rate with 98. 8 percent and, knives, sickles were employed -for the rest, and sterilization of the instruments was not performed in 47.8 percent.
(19) Cement bag and Vinyl were found to be most frequent used as delivery sheet(85. 1%).
